Updated Rankings

Rankings are a very tricky thing to put together.  They truly serve no purpose because even though a guy may not be ranked #2 in the division he could still be the number one contender.  But with no major MMA card this weekend I needed to write about something and my old rankings have not been updated in some time.

So take a look and tell me how wrong you think I am and who deserves to be higher/lower.

UFC 147: No Running Cave Man Here

The UFC had its first card of the weekend last night and it was successful until the main event. Cub Swanson had an awesome knockout that was followed by a great back and forth brawl between Brian Ebersole and TJ Waldburger.  The Stout-Fisher trilogy fight featured a steady dose of takedowns by Stout but was far from boring.

Then Pantera hit and crowd favorite Clay Guida came out bopping around like usual. Everyone expected the fight of the weekend between him and Gray Maynard.  What they got was a track meet with Guida refusing to engage most of the contest.  The judges ultimately rewarded Maynard with a split decision while the Jersey stopped fist pumping long enough to boo the Carpenter mercilessly.


On the bright side, my amazing fight prediction was a perfect 4 for 4 on the night, time for that streak to continue.

Previews and Predictions

Yesterday 4-0

Year: 39-24

Yuri "Marajó" Alcantara vs. Hacran Dias

When people think of the featherweight division Alcantara is a name that should be on the top of many people's minds but for some reason is not. He is riding a 13 fight win streak (2-0 UFC) and has not lost since 2009.  That streak includes a knockout over RIcardo Lamas who beat the #2 gut in the vision last night. 


Admittedly Dias is much more an unknown to me.  What I do know is a record of 20-1-1 is impressive no matter who you are facing and the fact he trains with the champion of the division, Jose Aldo, certainly cannot hurt.  HIs jiu-jitsu is a strength with 9 of his wins coming by submission and certainly give Alcantara trouble if the fight goes to the ground.


Alcantar Decision (29-28)
Fabricio "Vai Cavalo" Werdum vs. Mike Russow
The first and only heavyweight bout of the weekend takes place between the Brazil and the Chicago Police Officer.  I am torn here as my dad is also a police officer in the great city of Chicago but I also have been touting Werdum for awhile now.


Werdum may have the best jiu-jitsu in the division, just look at all his world championships.  His striking is no joke either, just look at his last fight with Roy Nelson where he put on a thai clinch clinic.Hi sonly losses in recent memory are to Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem, the top heavyweights in the world.


Russow walks into enemy territory as one of only two Americans on the card.  He is undefeated in the UFC at 4-0 but still has plenty of doubters, myself included.  The most memorable moment of his UFC career was in his second fight against Todd Duffee that can only be compared to the legendary battle between Homer SImpson and Boxcar Bob.  Who knows how Russow wins fights, because I sure dont?  Russow cannot be knocked out, it is just a fact.  Werdum is easily his toughest opponent yet and will pose many problems.


Werdum Decision (30-26)
Godofredo Pepey vs. Rony Mariano Bezerra


This is the fight that could steal the show on the entire card.  Anytime you put two dynamic featherweights together you are most liking going to get people talking.  Pepey is a perfect 8-0, finishing all of his opponents. Despite the impressive record he was the 12th overall pick in the house.  A decision win followed by a submission victory has landed the Brazilian in the final.


Rony is a guy that had many people talking before the show even started.  In only his third professional fight he faced off and lost by split decision to Renan Barao, a man fighting for the interim bantamweight title against Urijah Faber.  There was a reason Rony was the #1 overall pick.  Rony is a brutal, almost ripping off his close friend's arm in the quarterfinals just so he could advance.

Cezar Ferreira vs. Sergio Moraes
In the other TUF Brazil Finale pits Ferreria, the #2 overall pick, against Moraes, a late injury replacement. At only 4-2 Ferreria has outperformed his record.  He kicked off his tournament run with two guillotine submission wins and put an exclamation mark with a devastating head kick knock out.


Moraes submitted a jiu-jitsu world champion to get into the house so he obviously has skills.  A rear naked choke sent him into the semi finals where he was knocked out in the first round by Daniel Sarafian, the man he ended up replacing.  He will need to make the most of his second chance but I worry about how much the knockout will last with him.


Ferreira KO 1st Round
Wanderlei "the Axe Murderer" Silva vs. Rich "Ace" Franklin
This main event has gone through more changes than Cher has had plastic surgeries. What was originally supposed to be the most anticipated rematch of all-time has become a rematch in a fight that every one could live without. There is no denying the fact that Wanderlei is a legend.  New UFC fans do not realize what this guy did while he competed in Pride in Japan.  He has lost three of five and even though he has earned the right to go out on his own terms I can easily see this fight, win or lose, being his retirement fight.


Rich Franklin is the quintessential company man.  When the brand was growing he was the perfect poster boy, a former school teacher turned champion. Ever since dropping his title to Anderson Silva and then losing the rematch Franklin hasn't been concerned with what benefits him.  He constantly takes catchweight fights in foreign countries and always performs.  HIs last fight, a decision loss to Forrest Griffin last February, was disappointing but I expect a bounce-back performance for Ace.

UFC on FX 4: Loser goes to the Fuel cards

This weekend the UFC has two events that are almost throwaway cards. UFC 147 on Saturday has been ravaged by injuries and might as well be TUF Brazil Finale instead of a PPV. 

Friday night the UFC offers a free called, the very cleverly named UFC on FX 4.  This card is highlighted by a main event battle between Gray Maynard and Clay Guida.  The winner of this match will be the newest   lightweight people say deserve a title shot, completely forgetting any other fight that took place in the last two months.

The under card has intriguing story lines as well.  Hatsu Hioki after turning down a title shot to earn more experience will be in action against a dangerous Ricardo Lamas.  Also, Dustin Pague goes for his second win in two weeks when he faces Ken Stone on the facebook under card.

After less than stellar predictions (for forgiveness I give you this) on the previous two cards I look forward to gaining back momentum this weekend.

Previews and Predictions

Last Week: 1-3

Year: 35-24

Ross “the Real Deal” Pearson vs. Cub Swanson

Pearson, The Ultimate Fighter Season 9 winner, did not have to drop to featherweight.  After all he was 4-2 in the UFC at 155 pounds, his first time at the weight in December he had a solid performance in a decision win against Junior Assunção. The England native is well-rounded looking at his wins breakdown (3 KO, 5 Subs, 5 dec) and rarely has disappointing performances.

Swanson, on the other hand, is wildly inconsistent.  He has above average power in the division and is always the aggressor in his fights.  Sometimes this leads to impressive KOs but he can also put himself in poor positions and end up getting finished.

This fight could end in many ways. I can see either one with a dominating decision victory or finishing this fight.  Swanson is the underdog (+160) in this fight and he looked the best I have seen him in his last fight against George Roop.

Brian “Bad Boy” Ebersole vs. TJ Waldburger

Ebersole, the king of cartwheel kicks and ridiculous body hair, is riding a ten-fight win streak into this fight.  A veteran of 65 fights, “Bad Boy” is 3-0 inside the Octagon, most recently defeating Claude Patrick by split decision in December.  While many view him as a novelty because the hair and his antics, Ebersole is a name to watch in a welterweight division that is wide open after the top four.

Waldburger is thought of as a young guy in the sport at only 24 years old but he has plenty of experience.  Since turning pro at age 17 he has competed 21 times, winning 15 of them (3-1 in the UFC). There is no secret to Waldburger’s game.  He is a grappler through and through (1 KO compared to 12 submission wins).

This fight is most likely going to be a grappling affair between the two of them but I see the experience ultimately winning out.

Ebersole Unamimous Decision (30-27)

Sam “Hands of Stone” Stout vs. Spencer "the King" Fisher

Haven’t we seen this before….? Technically we have seen it twice with the two splitting their first two meetings.  Stout won the initial meeting in 2006 by split decision that still ranks as one of the best fights in the promotion’s history. Before dropping his last fight Stout had seen a resurgence in his career winning 4 of 5 fights, including 4 bonuses.

Fisher won the rematch 15 months later by decision in another great brawl that took home fight of the night honors.  Lately, Fisher has been hobbled by injuries and unimpressive in the Octagon, losing 4 of his last 5.

This fight very well could be Fisher’s swan song and there is not a better opponent he could face for it.  I expect another fight of the night to come from these guys and look for Stout to remain true to his nickname.

Gray “the Bully” Maynard vs. Clay “the Carpenter” Guida

The main event pits two lightweights looking to avoid gatekeeper status against each other. In his last two bouts it looked like Maynard was going to defeat Frankie Edgar and become champion. Edgar’s crazy chin led to a draw in the first fight and “the Bully” receiving the first loss of his career in the rematch. 

It’s a mental game for Maynard.  How will he respond coming off a loss?  Some fighters say their first loss is the best thing to ever happen to them, while others press two much in their next fight and up getting caught.  Maynard has the best wrestling of any opponent in Guida’s history so expect him able to thwart any lay n pray attempt from “the Carpenter.”

At first glance Guida’s record is not overly impressive.  A 9-6 record inside the Octagon seems like a guy who should not be in the title discussion but something clicked for the fan favorite in 2010. He started a four fight win streak, including a win over WEC champion Anthony Pettis.

He rode that momentum to a title eliminator fight against Benson Henderson where he ultimately dropped it by decision.  “The Carpenter” has a couple things going for him besides his sweet hair.  He has cardio for days too go a long with an iron chin.  The one glaring weakness in his game is his striking.  Guida can jump around all he wants but that does not make him hit any harder.

This is going to be a battle of two fights.   I expect Maynard to win the early rounds but he can’t make the mistake he did in the two Edgar fights.  In each of them he pushed for the finish too soon and ultimately gassed out; this is a recipe for disaster going against a grinder like Guida.  Fortunately, for “the Bully” Guida doesn’t have the strongest hands and if the tale of Samson taught me anything, Guida will be powerless with his braided up.

IT ISSS TIIMMMEEE.. (for me to suck at this again)….

I tried a new strategy last time, and it worked….. but I am stupid and going back to my old crappy strategy…. I am officially going on record saying my picks will be better than both Danny Boy Downes and Marty (my co-host)… I plan on taking out 2/3 of the Downes bro’s.. We will let the sun get the 3^rd one.

Here we go:

Ross Pearson vs. Cub Swanson- Featherweight Division

Ross has made the shift down a weight class, to a much more wide open Featherweight division. Pearson was an exciting fighter at 155, wonder how the shift treats him to 145… Wont be easy against Cub Swanson. Cub needed a big win in his last fight.. and he got just that with a nasty KO of George Roop. This fight isn’t going to decide who will get Jose Aldo.. But it does mean a lot in both of these fighters’ careers in the 145 pound division…

My prediction: Pearson by decision

We head over to the welterweight division for Brian Ebersole and TJ Waldburger. Ebersole is 3-0 in the UFC and TWAS(the white Anderson Silva) hasn’t lost a MMA fight in 4 years…. That is an impressive feat. He goes up against an equally impressive Waldburger 3-1 in the UFC with his only octagon loss coming at the hands of Johny Hendricks…. I see this playing out like this: Waldburger comes out aggressively, gets caught early.. and spends about 25 seconds getting elbows, and other painful shots till the fight is stopped…

My prediction: Ebersole by TKO RD 1

Sam Stout vs Spencer Fisher is the co-main event…. Stout has been up and down. After beating Joe Lauzon, he loses to Jeremy “heathen” Stevens… Stout is coming off a loss to Thiago Tavares, but has won a bonus in 4 of his last 6 fights… Send in Spencer “The King” Fisher.. It has been a good week for those nicknamed “King”… Which might be needed because Fisher is 1-4 in his last 5 fights, and might be fighting for his career.

My prediction: Stout RD 3 TKO- FOTN

Now to the main event

Gray “The Bully” Maynard amd Clay” The carpenter” Guida. Maynard landed the biggest shot before Bruce Buffer even announced his presence in the octagon, with “Hairgate 2012”. If you haven’t heard, Guida is being forced to braid his infamous wavy hair…. That is like telling Danny Boy Downes to tan.. or me to put down the Bacon.. or telling Marty to not make snide remarks about my grammar… DON’T TAKE AWAY OUR NICHE!

I think Maynard lives up to his name and bullies the always moving carpenter.

My prediction: Maynard by Unanimous Decision

UFC on FX 3: Stache Vs Mouse Take II

After two great performances my predictions took a slight hit last week due to two upsets in the TUF final and main event. A weaker man would have made excuses and avoided another piece.  Did you think I’d crumble; did you think I’d lay down and die? Oh no, not I, I will survive!

The UFC is lucky to still have its main event.  Especially after the past couple weeks in the sport has seen so many injuries, Belfort, Bisping, Stann and Cruz just to name a few. We all know the controversy that was McCall-Johnson I and hopefully this fight won’t disappoint and the company can crown its first ever flyweight champion some time this summer.

Now on to the picks…

Previews and Predictions

Last Week: 2-3

Year: 34-21

Eddie Wineland vs. Scott "Young Guns" Jorgensen

When the WEC was absorbed by the UFC Wineland, a former bantamweight champion, was a name people that tapped as a potential champion. On the last WEC card he had a devastating KO by a slam against Ken Stone that made a rocking Phoenix crown go silent. Since coming over though he has lost his two bouts against Urijah Faber and Joseph Benavidez. Wineland can finish the fight any second standing but will need to avoid Jorgensen’s takedowns in order to have a chance in this one.

Jorgensen is the definition of a gate keeper at this point in his career.  He has no problem against Jeff Curran or Ken Stone but when he faces the elite fighters in the division, Renan Barao/Dominick Cruz, he struggles. “Young Guns” is very difficult to finish though, only being stopped once in 18 career fights.  The key for him is to avoid getting into a brawl with Wineland.  Jorgensen needs to utilize wrestling and ground the dangerous Wineland and grind to a victory.

Jorgensen Unanimous Decision (30-27)

Mike "Quicksand" Pyle vs. Josh "The Dentist" Neer

This is a great fight between two veterans; they combine for 75 professional fights. Pyle had a three fight win streak before running into the pain train that is Rory MacDonald.  He bounced back nicely though when he marched into Brazil on enemy soil and TKOd Ricardo Faunch. “Quciksand” makes his money on the ground though, earning 16 of his 22 wins by submission.

“The Dentist” is on a six fight winning streak, the second longest of his career, where has finished all of his opponents. He has fought all over the world against some of the top names in the sport and Neer seems like a different fighter in his third stint with the UFC.  Neer can win this fight wherever it goes but I imagine he will want to keep it standing and earn his 18th knockout.

Erick "Indio" Silva vs. Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman

When Silva was last seen in the Octagon he was watching Joe Rogan verbally lash Mario Yamasaki for his decision to disqualify Silva for blows to the back of the head against Carlo Prater. Whether you agreed with decision or not, I did not, it is impossible to argue that Silva has not been impressive in his two UFC bouts.  His explosive striking has ended both fights, legally or not, in under a minute.  Oh yeah, he is a black belt in jiu-jitsu and judo as well.

Brenneman is 4-2 in the Octagon with all his wins by decision.  He had a great win against Rick Story back in June 2011 but that momentum quickly disappeared after an Anthony Johnson head kick.  The key to this fight is whether or not “the Spaniard” can get this fight to the ground.  Silva has all the credentials but no one knows how great they really are because his fights have been over so quickly.

Ian "Uncle Creepy" McCall vs. Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson

This is a fight I have been looking forward to ever since the Australia commission botched the result of their initial bout. Have no fear, I have a source inside the company that says Judge Cecil Peoples is bringing along one of these to insure correct addition.Not only do I love both of their nicknames, the two of them each have entertaining styles of fighting.  McCall shocked everyone in the first fight when he outwrestled Johnson.  “Uncle Creepy” also was able to land the harder strikes, nearly finishing Johnson in the third round.

While “Mighty Mouse” may have been outwrestled there was no doubt he was the quicker of the two fighters.  He has also stated on many occasions how his new diet should allow him to have more energy and now wear down in the later stages of the fight.

This is a hard fight to predict because neither guy has fought anyone else since their last bout.  I think McCall has the mental edge in this one because he almost finished Johnson.  This should be a back and forth war but I don’t see a stoppage happening either.

Brace Yourself...

Last weeks predictions proved a few things: I suck at predictions, I suck at grammar, and I make my co-host, Marty Downes look really intelligent.

So, I have a new plan this week. I am going to pick against who I think will win.  That is right; I am trying a brand new strategy. I still promise shitty Grammar, cant change too much.

This free card will have 4 fights and will start off in the Bantamweight division with Eddie Wineland and Scott “Young guns” Jorgensen. Wineland is 0-2 since coming over to the UFC, but I think a lot of people would be having had to fight Faber and Benavidez. Scott Jorgensen is coming off a loss against Renan Barao, who will be fighting Faber for the interim belt in a month. This fight is a great chance for Young Guns to make a move to make a run at the title. I would pick Scotty, but since I am doing this new style of picking, I will take the latter.

Pick: Eddie Wineland (Split Decision)

In the second main event fight, we go to what you could consider “fatties” compared to 2 of the 3 other fights on this card with Mike “Quicksand” Pyle and “The Dentist” Josh Neer. Pyle is entering his 9^th fight in the octagon, and has a very solid 5-3 record. The Dentist is 2-0 so far in the UFC and is moving his way through the division. I have a hard time picking against the Dentist (mainly because I am scared of dentists) but.. I am trying a new style… so….

Pick: Mike “Quicksand” Pyle (Unanimous Decision 29-28)

We stay in the Welterweight division for Erick “ Indio ” Silva and Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman. Indian vs a Spaniard… I feel like there is some war I could reference, but I fell asleep in my 9^th grade Social Studies class a lot. Sorry Ms. Fackler (don’t let the name confuse you… SHE WAS A BABE) Silva “lost” his last fight because of shots to the back of Prater’s head… While he still received his fight bonus, his record moved to 1-1 in the octagon. Brenneman has struggled since stopping the “Horror” Story. While he is 1-1 since that huge win, he hasn’t impressed…. But since I think Silva wins I have to go to my new strategy…. This is really testing my new strategy.

Pick: Brenneman (TKO-Punches/Knees RD1)

NOW THE MAIIIINNNNN EEEVVVEENNNNTTT OF THE EVENING (in my best Buffer typing)… I feel like we have seen this fight before….. Déjà vu maybe? Or just Judges who cant add good… HEY, I can do that (make mental note to apply to be a UFC judge).
